San Carlos United Methodist Church Youth Group

Pillars of Following

What do we represent?

Non-Conformity:
We are active participants in the world, but not part of destructive social norms. Being part of the youth group and helping the community now will help us learn and continue to serve in the future.
We are not part of the problem we are part of the solution!

Variety:
Together we find new ways to show love, support, and community, while having a blast.

New Ideas:
Living and Learning ways to truly FOLLOW Jesus.
We need to take the time to help resolve issues such as poverty instead of just throwing money at the problem.  We understand that it will take more than a “quick fix.”  It will take a commitment of our time.

How do we feel about Love, Risk, ECT?

Take risks to show love:
We are taught to truly love those who are “different”.  This isn’t something that has conditions or an agenda.  We know that we can learn a lot from people who are “different,” because aren’t we all different?

Take risks in service to others:

Meeting people in need where they are, not expecting them to come to us. Going outside our comfort zone and using our faith to help others in need.

Living the Detour:
Jesus’ ministry was one of detours.  He never hesitated to help people in need even if it wasn’t on his calendar for that day.

Called to Inclusiveness:
We deny every form of discrimination.  It isn’t our place to judge others, we are called to accept and love everyone.

What is our focus?

Help people in need:
We do this without an agenda or checklist.
We do monthly service projects to help those in our church community, our surrounding community, and mission trips that help people in our country and around the world.
(The Nurturing Community)

Raise money:
Financial responsibility.
What can we give and what can we do without?
We do fundraisers that include; Car washes, Service projects at homes, Dodgeball tournaments, Softball Tournaments, and Community meals.  This money helps our group, our community, and the world.
(The Economic Community)

Have Fun:
Shattering the idea that Christians can’t have fun!
We have fun whether it is playing games at youth group, going on winter ski trips to Big Bear, Magic Mountain, and SDSU Football & Basketball games.  During the summer we have weekly beach days, a week long summer camp, Soak City, Ski Trip to the Colorado River, Padres Game, and much more!

New ways to meet people:
We are participants in the community through; sports, social groups, music, art, and service.
(The Social Community)

Care for God's creation:
We are called to care for the environment.  Jesus teaches us to be environmentalists, to care for what God has lovingly given to us. We do park clean up at Mission Trails.  We recycle telephones and ink cartridges.
(The Natural World)

Our Neighbors:
Our brothers and sisters extend to our family, our neighborhood, our city, our state, our country, and our world.  All people are brothers and sisters, Jesus teaches us to care for all.
